Who does not know Aviation Social Centre? Everybody in Accra knows it, and if you are visiting Ghana for the first time, you will pass its way when you leave the airport to downtown. Aviation Social Centre is a modern gym whose members come mainly from the middle and higher class.
On October 15 1999, Aviation Centre initially intended to be the staff clubhouse of Ghana Civil Aviation Authority, commenced operations as a limited liability company, and subsidiary of the Authority, to provide sporting, fitness and recreational services to the emerging industry. Over time the banqueting and bar facilities were included in the operations.
Its slogan "Total Quality Life" captures the mission of Aviation Social Centre to improve the quality of living by providing innovative and exceptional health, recreational and social services.
The gym, which is equipped with various cardiovascular and training equipment including treadmills, steppers, elliptical and rowing machines, stationary bikes, cable cross and counter-balanced Smith machines amongst others with qualified fitness instructors and an aerobics studio offers a variety of workouts-up to eight different classes per day and can accommodate up to about 30 people per class.
Tennis, basketball and volleyball courts with experienced coaches are also part of this department. This department also organises various fitness events, such as the Vacation Sports Clinic for children, Tennis tournaments and monthly power Walk, an exhibition of keeping fit while having fun. The first annual fitness fiesta dubbed FitExplo was held in 2005.
The Banqueting & Bar department is regarded as a one-stop multifunctional venue with secured parking that can be set up for corporate and private entertainment and social events such as product launches, social functions, fashion shows, dinner dances and wedding. The banqueting department initially provided only tables and chairs but now has expanded to include canopies, tablecloth, waiters and glasses, with drinks being fully provided by the Bart.
The "Runway Bar" sells bottled water and juices to users of the gym, and also alcoholic and non-alcoholic to events held in the banqueting section. Currently the bar supplies drinks to all events held in the Centre while servicing members of the fitness and sports section. It has also developed its own clientele who do not include members of the gym. The bar hosts the Salsa Dance Club each Friday and the weekly Happy Hour.
The children's play area was initially constructed for parents who may have come to use the facilities and would have brought children with them. However it has somewhat become profit generating that some children's parties and activities are planned around it.
