Metro Fitness Walk
15 October 2006 - Personnel of security services and their civilian counterparts from some institutions in the Sekondi-Takoradi Metropolis -Ghana- on Saturday participated in the fourth quarter Metro fitness walk. Mr Evans Anthony Amoah, Western Regional Minister who addressed the participants after the event, at the Myohuang Barracks at Apremdo near Takoradi stressed the need for more avenues to be exploited to further enhance military-civilian cooperation. He suggested the game of football and other sporting events among the participants to not only ensure their physical fitness at all the times and also as a way of strengthening the existing cordial relations between the civilian population and security personnel. Sports and HIV/AIDS: Potential impact on children
18 October 2006 - Out of the 40 million people living with HIV/AIDS in the world today, 2.5 million people infected are children under the age of 15. Similar to malaria, HIV is preventable provided that people are empowered with the knowledge and skills about the true nature of the infection and the effective means for its prevention. The Deputy Executive Director of UNICEF, Mr. Toshiyuki Niwa, has emphasized the importance of sports and awareness in combating the HIV pandemic in young people. He said due to the immense popularity of sports, "sport-related organizations and leagues are uniquely poised to spread critical knowledge and prevention messages to increase young people's access to services to teach life skills, to bring communities together, and particularly to address young people in a language they understand". Zimbabwean bodybuilders in final workouts
20 October 2006 - It was all work and no play at some of the best gyms around the country yesterday as some of athletes went through their final workouts in preparation for the Mr and Ms Zimbabwe bodybuilding contest. Registration for the contest closes this morning while the pre-judging will be held this evening at 7 Arts Theatre in Avondale. The competition has been set for tomorrow at the same venue. With defending champion Walter Munyikwa choosing not to defend his title, three-time winner Givemore Marume becomes the pre-event favourite. Marume trains at Pro-Fitness Gym alongside Blessing Samaringa, who is challenging for the coveted title from the lightweight division where he is upbeat about his chances. (Source: The Herald)
Marume wins Mr Zimbabwe bodybuilding championship
23 October 2006 - Givemore Marume claimed his fourth Mr Zimbabwe bodybuilding championship when he won the coveted prize at 7 Arts Theatre on Saturday night. On the same night Charity Juma was the lone entry to take the Ms Zimbabwe while Sam Mapuranga took the Mr Junior Zimbabwe title. For winning the contest, Marume, who pumps iron at Pro-Fitness Gym, took home $100 000 cash, a trophy and a hamper after beating Chenai Mambwere and Blessing Samaringa in the final round. Upenyu Biglife Mahlaulo of Muscle and Fitness in Gweru came second while veteran Spencer Bauti of Jet Studios in Mutare was third. (Source: The Herald)
Mr Uganda Bodybuilding Championship
23 October 2006 - Nile Breweries has offered to sponsor the Mr. Uganda'06 body building championships. The event is set for October 29 at Lugogo Indoor stadium starting 2pm. Nile will be joined by The New Vision and Rwenzori Beverages in sponsoring the event that will attract body builders across the country. Defending champion Kawuulu Nsubuga will battle rivals Ismail Mukalazi, and John Bosco Ssebabi, a bronze medal winner at the African event. (Source: The New Vision)
Kenya: Using sports to improve lives
25 October 2006 - Sport is a good tool for changing impoverished lives, two former international sportsmen said on Wednesday in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi. Marcel Desailly, a former captain of the French national football team, said that through sports, youth become empowered to fight for their lives in the face of drugs and violence rampant in the slums. Desailly and Michael Johnson, a five-time Olympic gold medalist sprinter, are in the country to motivate young people living in the slums. "Sports have the ability to inspire youth living in difficult circumstances" they said. Desailly and Johnson will also be visiting Kampala, the Ugandan capital. (Source: IRIN News)
Former Ms Zimbabwe bodybuilding champion dies
30 October 2006 - Sabina Marowanyanga, former Ms Zimbabwe, has died. She was 32. Marowanyanga, who was also the reigning Ms Iron Man, died at Chitungwiza Central Hospital in the early hours of yesterday from injuries sustained in a car accident in the town a few hours earlier. "Sabina was one of the few courageous women who were keeping the sport alive on the female side. Her death comes a few days after the Mr and Ms Zimbabwe contest where she had indicated that she was going to take part but failed. She had a very promising future and her body had the right proportion, shape and height," said ZNBBWA president George Takundwa yesterday. 30 October 2006 - John Bosco Ssebabi crowned a great year by emerging Mr Uganda 2006 a month after winning the African bodybuilding championship bronze in Cairo. The 27-year-old Nakivubo body-builder shrugged off stiff competition from Fahad Mugaga in the welter-weight preliminary stage at Lugogo. He then utilised his free pause style to beat Isma Mukalazi and Ivan Byekwaso to the overall crown in the finals. Former champion Nsubuga Kawulu (Umoja Gym) was knocked out early in the heavyweight contest.

Women in Sports Festival soon in Banjul
8 November 2006 - The Gambia National Olympic Committee (GNOC) will hold a week-long festival to be dubbed 'Women's Sports Festival' as a mechanism to encourage and promote women's participation in sports. This historic festival is slated for November 17th to 25th, 2006 and would be observed in all regions around the country with the theme "Mainstreaming Women in Sports and Development from Rhetoric to Action". 16 November 2006 - The eliminatory phase of a contest of athletic force called "Gaba Togo 2006" was held November 12 in Lome and gathered 18 competitors. 12 candidates were selected for the final phase which will take place on December 2.
